Dan German has been a resident of Milford for 57 years! He attended Mathewson School and then Milford High School, Class of “79”. After earning a business and finance degree from Northern Arizona University, he received his MBA from Sacred Heart University. In 1985, following college, German opened Creative Health & Fitness, a very successful fitness center in Milford, that later merged with Planet Fitness in 2007. Today he is a financial advisor with his own company, German Financial, and works with individuals and small businesses on their insurance and financial needs.
For the past 10 years, he has served on the Board of Aldermen and says it’s only natural that he step up and run for mayor. Dan is challenging Democratic incumbent Mayor Ben Blake in this November 5th local election.
“As a veteran member of the Milford Board of Aldermen, we work hard each year to find ways to save money and be more efficient.
For the past four years, we have been successful in that task by reducing taxes. ”German openly asks “Could there have been greater savings? Yes.” He strongly feels one of the best ways to reduce taxes is by increasing the grand list and driving down the mill rate and to do that the city must do a better job attracting and retaining good business.
He notes residents are concerned with all the 8-30g affordable housing developments that are threatening the city’s historic charm. As well as city roads need to be fixed and paved, pointing to flooding at Point Beach and Bay View Beach areas. Looking ahead and considering his plans for the city, German shares his concerns about the city’s debt and bonding.
“The majority of our Milford residents do not know that our debt and bonding has nearly doubled in the past eight years,” German said. “This money must be paid back. We’ve been borrowing way too much in recent years, and each year we see our debt payments are becoming a larger line item in our budget.”
German feels the city needs to support and respect its police officers noting there has been an increase in crime in Milford, albeit robberies at local businesses or cars stolen, noting his own car had been stolen about six months ago.
“I love Milford, grew up here and want the best for our great city! Unfortunately, I’ve seen us drifting away from so many of the sound governmental practices and principles that have made this an amazing city. With my business and government experience, my goal is to make Milford an increasingly effective and amazing place to live, work, play and invest!”– Alderman Dan German
